Ran them through SSIM comparison, and it's encoded the EXACT SAME THING on all files, ignoring my "Picture" setting. I made a bunch of different outputs of one scene using differnet Residual/Luma settings, making sure to change the "Picture" type in the list, then encoding the file. This is the worst one: sometimes the encoder DOESN'T APPLY the settings you specify. I have to use VirtualDub to find the in/out frames and refer to the frame number.Ģ. I don't know what causes it, but it happens sometimes. So I'm spending a lot of time on getting the best settings for the problematic parts. I'm encoding a movie right now which is about 3 hours long and has to fit on one DVD9. If SP3 can do this or better for half the price. HCenc is not bad, but the way it coarsely quantizes some blocks reminds me of TMPGenc (that's a compliment) :) CCE SP2 retains the grain to a better extent and the fact that it looks so close to the master makes the $2K I paid for it feel like a bargain, frankly. Source (PAL Digital Betacam captured via SDI, scaled to 720x480): Edit: these are all at about 8mbps average, 8.5mbps max. I only sharpened the view to make differences more obvious, NOT the input to the encoder. Here are some sharpened views of some quick test encodes I just did. The fact that HCenc is free is very nice, though :) Does it pass verification for replication? However, CCE SP2 is still slightly better from the test I did. I just tried HCenc out, and I agree that the quality is very good.
